Cognitive Assessments

Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, 5th Edition (SB-V)

How is this intelligence test different from all the others?

Before we dive into the specifics, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale (SB-V) assesses the intelligence and cognitive abilities in children aged 2 years and above.

There are 2 versions — a full test and abbreviated test. The full test takes about 45 to 75 minutes to administer, while the abbreviated test takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes to administer.

Features of the Complete Version

The complete version of SB-V provides a comprehensive coverage of intelligence and cognitive abilities by assessing 5 factors based on the Cattell-Horn-Carroll hierarchical model of general intellectual ability:

Ψ Fluid reasoning
Ψ Knowledge
Ψ Quantitative reasoning
Ψ Visuospatial processing and
Ψ Working memory

These factors include separate subtests grouped into one of 2 domains. A Full-Scale IQ composite score, as well as Nonverbal IQ (NVIQ) and Verbal IQ (VIQ) composite scores are then obtained.

Features of the Abbreviated Version

The abbreviated version of the SB-V focuses on providing a quick estimate of fluid reasoning and crystallised ability.

In this version, there are only 2 subtests — Object Series or Matrices (non-verbal) and Vocabulary (verbal). These subtests are chosen for their high predictive ability of academic and vocational advancement.

Why Choose the SB-V

Given its extensive history, the SB-V has been and is currently used to diagnose a wide variety of developmental disabilities. In fact, special populations were included during the standardisation process, such as children with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder or specific learning disorder. In instances where you or your child may have the mentioned conditions, taking the test would allow for a more accurate assessment and comparison of their abilities with their peers. As the SB-V covers a wide age range, it can be used as part of early childhood assessment, psychoeducational evaluations or later career development planning.
