Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-2)

Is your child’s executive function developing normally at home and school?

The Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF-2) assesses executive function and self-regulation that can be seen in home and school environments for children and adolescents between the ages of 5 to 18.

The assessment takes 10-15 minutes to complete and is typically broken down into the following 3 different assessment forms:

Ψ Parent Form

Ψ Teacher Form

Ψ Self-Student Assessment Form (only for older children aged 11-18 years)

The BRIEF-2 is composed of 10 clinical scales:

Ψ Inhibition

Ψ Self-Monitoring

Ψ Shift

Ψ Emotional Control

Ψ Initiation

Ψ Task Completion

Ψ Working Memory

Ψ Planning/Organising

Ψ Task-Monitoring

Ψ Organisation of Materials

Each scale is scored with the parent, teacher, and self-student assessment forms. Each of the scores is then compiled into a global executive composite score that will be compared against the normative scores for the child’s age, gender, ethnicity, and parent education level to determine whether the reported behaviours exhibited by the child are a cause for concern, or whether they are within the appropriate range as compared to their peers.

The BRIEF-2 is useful for the diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other attention-related neurological disorders. In addition, it is useful because it identifies exactly where and why children struggle, allowing therapists and schools to offer well-informed intervention and accommodation recommendations. The BRIEF-2 assessment also enables the administrator – typically an experienced child psychologist – to quickly determine the possible problems of the child’s or adolescent’s executive functioning across multiple perspectives.

However, it is important to note that the use of the BRIEF-2 with children under 5 years of age is not recommended as the assessment items are different and less applicable. Children aged 2 to 6 years of age should be tested on the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function – Preschool (BRIEF-P).

The BRIEF-II is appropriate for children and adolescents ranging from 5 to 18 years of age.

It takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete the test.
