Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (Vineland-3)
Worrying about how well you or your child adapt to situations?
The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (Vineland-3) is the test you’re looking for.
It specifically measures adaptive behaviour skills in communication, daily living skills, socialisation and motor skills. While commonly used on children and adolescents, it is suitable for all individuals between 0 to 90 years old.
The Vineland-3 takes into account perspectives from a child’s parent or caregiver, and teacher. It consists of 3 forms:
Ψ Interview Form: completed by examiner with someone who is knowledgeable about examinee’s everyday adaptive functioning (usually a caregiver) to gather information about verbal answers, facial expressions, body language cues, and so on
Ψ Parent/Caregiver Form and Teacher Form: completed by a caregiver and teacher respectively, both of whom should be knowledgeable about examinee’s functioning in the applicable settings
Each form has Comprehension and Domain-Level versions – the Comprehension version has more items while the Domain-level is briefer. However, both versions cover 3 domains – communication, daily living skills, and socialisation.
The Vineland-3 can be helpful in diagnosing and classifying various intellectual or neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dementia. The observable behaviours and ratings from both teachers and caregivers give a comprehensive understanding of the child’s adaptive functioning in various contexts, and will be useful in intervention and program planning.
However, the Vineland-3 is reliant on other observers’s input of the examinee’s condition and covers only the adaptive functioning. We recommend pairing this with other scales depending on the concerns, such as the Conners 3rd edition or the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule.
The Vineland-3 is appropriate for children and adults ranging from 0 to 90 years of age.
It takes around 40 to 60 minutes to complete each test.
